How to get to Saint-Gervais and Les Contamines-Montjoie ?

Special arrangements for Friday 28 August: road closures from 18:00 to 00:00

As part of the organisation of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc, at the request of the French Gendarmerie and in collaboration with local elected officials, temporary road closures will be implemented on Friday 28 August from 18:00 to 00:00. These measures aim to manage the flow of UTMB supporters and spectators while preserving the quality of life of local residents as much as possible.

During this period, non-residents will not be able to travel by private vehicle to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Les Contamines-Montjoie or Passy (Abbaye, Plagnes and Tete Noire sectors).

Road closures

Road-closure system to block the climb to Saint-Gervais and Les Contamines :


Date and time : Friday 28 August, from 18:00 to 23:00.


Areas concerned :

  • Left lane of exit 22 from the motorway towards Le Fayet: closure of the D1205.
  • Rond-point des Allobroges: closure of the D902 to reach Saint-Gervais from Le Fayet.
  • Rond-point de Megeve: closure of the D909 to access Saint-Gervais from Megeve.
  • Access to Val Montjoie via Le Bettex or Saint-Nicolas de Veroce: closures of Routes des Ponthieux and d’Orsin.

Road-closure system to block traffic from Les Contamines towards Saint-Gervais:

  • Date and time : Friday 28 August, from 19:00 to 00:00.
  • Areas concerned : roads allowing vehicles to leave Les Contamines towards Saint-Gervais will be closed in the downhill direction.

People who can request a vehicle pass :

**Residents of Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines and Passy

**(Abbaye, Plagnes and Tete Noire sectors) living in an area affected by the road closures, as well as people staying in hotels or other temporary accommodation, can obtain a pass from their respective Tourist Office if they absolutely need to travel during the closure times, for example to return from work or attend a medical appointment.

Last-minute distribution points will also be set up on Friday 29 August from 17:30 at the Mountain Store forecourt, 170 Av. Leman Mont-Blanc in Passy, and at Chalet des Createurs, 900 route de Megeve in Saint-Gervais.

Vehicle passes will be available from 30 July.

To obtain this pass, eligible applicants must present their vehicle registration document and proof of residence or accommodation when collecting it from their Tourist Office.

Eligible applicants who are unable to go physically to their Tourist Office must contact it to obtain the procedure for a remote request and same-day collection of the pass at the Mountain Store forecourt or Chalet des Createurs distribution points.

For people who do not live in Saint-Gervais or Les Contamines :

It will not be possible to access Saint-Gervais, including Le Bettex and Saint-Nicolas de Veroce, or Les Contamines by car without a pass. The organisation offers several transport solutions so that you can follow the start of the race with peace of mind :

  • Train : we recommend travelling by train to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains Le Fayet station, then taking the Valleen gondola, which provides direct access to Saint-Gervais and will exceptionally be free of charge for both outward and return journeys on Friday 29 August from 18:00 to 22:00.

  • Park-and-ride car parks in Pass : a UTMB Bus shuttle service will transport people from the park-and-ride areas made available by the municipality of Passy, Avenue Joseph Thoret and the Mountain Store, 170 Av. Leman Mont-Blanc, to the departure area of the Valleen gondola, which provides direct access to Saint-Gervais and will exceptionally be free of charge for both outward and return journeys on Friday 29 August from 18:00 to 22:00.

  • Bus : a UTMB Mobility bus service will operate between Saint-Gervais, at the MJC car park, and Les Contamines, at the Lay and Notre-Dame de la Gorge park-and-ride car parks. This is a paid service.
