RUNNER'S COMMITMENT

To participate in the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc events, in particular the UTMB, CCC and TDS, it is essential:
  1. To be completely aware of the length and specificity of the event and to be perfectly prepared for it;
  2. To have a real capacity for personal autonomy in the mountains (1) allowing for the runner to manage any sort of problems that might occur during this type of event:
    1. Know how to face up to weather conditions which could be very difficult to deal with at high altitude (night, wind, cold, fog, rain or snow) without any help.
    2. Know how to manage, including when alone, physical or mental problems arising from a great fatigue - such as digestive problems, muscle or articular pains, small wounds...
    3. To be totally aware that the organization’s role is not to help a runner manage these problems.
    4. To be totally aware that for such an activity in the mountains, security depends on the runner's ability to adapt to these problems

  3. (1)participating in the UTMB® World Series circuit is useful for acquiring this experience (see paragraph REGISTRATION CONDITIONS), but not necessarily sufficient.

  4. That runners inform their crews that they must respect nature, people and the regulations of the race.
  5. To accept to receive newsletters providing information about the event.

SEMI AUTONOMY

The races must be completed in semi-autonomy. The HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc events take place in one single stage, at an undefined pace, within the cut-off times which are different for each race. Semi-autonomy means being able to be self-sufficient in the itinerary between two aid stations - in terms of food, clothing and security equipment - and be able to manage unexpected situations or sudden problems (bad weather, physical problems, injury...) This implies the following rules:

  1. Runners must always carry with them all items of the mandatory gear checklist (see paragraph EQUIPMENT). They have to carry their equipment in a pack, tagged during race-pack collection, which cannot be changed along the race route. At any moment of the race, the race directors might verify the pack and its contents. The runner must accept these checks or they might be excluded from the race.

  2. Aid stations supply fluids and food to be consumed on site. The organization only supplies still water or energizing drinks for filling water bottles or hydration packs. Runners should make sure that they have, when leaving the aid station, the necessary fluids and food to keep them going until the following aid station. For slower runners, the longest sections without any aid stations can last more than 4hrs during the UTMB, more than 3hrs during the CCC and OCC and more than 6hrs during the TDS.

  3. During the UTMB®, CCC® and TDS®, crews are only allowed to enter aid stations (*) specifically designated for crews. Crews may only enter the area specifically designated for them and must comply with all instructions of aid station team leader and staff. Runners may only have one assistant, without specific equipment other than a bag with a maximum volume of 30 liters. Assistance given by a team of professionals, or any medic or paramedic, is strictly forbidden. A part from this area, the rest of the aid station is strictly reserved for runners. No assistance is allowed, at any point along the race route, during the OCC, MCC, ETC and YCC.

  4. Runners may only be accompanied in the areas where assistance is allowed - these areas are clearly marked in the proximity of the aid station. It is forbidden to accompany or be accompanied along any part of the race route by someone who is not registered for the race.

(*) Personal assistance is allowed at the following aid stations : UTMB : Les Contamines Montjoie, Courmayeur, Champex, Trient, Vallorcine. CCC : Champex, Trient, Vallorcine. TDS : Bourg St Maurice, Beaufort, Les Contamines Montjoie It is forbidden at all other aid stations, as well as at any other point along the race route. OCC, MCC, ETC, YCC : no assistance is allowed at any point of the race

EQUIPMENT

In order to ensure their security and the smooth running of the each event, each participant must carry with them all the items listed in the mandatory equipment checklist (see below). The “heat-wave” and “cold weather” kits are part of the mandatory equipment. According to the weather conditions, the organization might require one of those three additional kits and inform each participant before the opening of the race-pack collection. Each participant must therefore present their mandatory equipment - including the additional kit requested by the organization - in order to get their race bib, and agree to keep it with them throughout the event.

Please note: the items included in the mandatory equipment checklist are the basic pieces, which each trail-runner must adapt according to their own skills. INSURANCE

Each participant must have an insurance which covers the cost of search and rescue and evacuation in France, Italy and Switzerland. Such insurance can be taken out with any organization of the runner's choice- e.g. the Fédération Française d'Athlétisme via the subscription to a 'Pass’Running, Pass J’aime Courir' - or a license.

UTMB Group has set up, with Assurinco, a repatriation insurance to help you in your practice of Trail Running but not only.

For 49€ / year, you can subscribe to an insurance that guarantees you a worldwide coverage for your rescue, repatriation and medical care expenses (including helicopter rescue) in the context of your trail running practice whether it is for training, competitions or even for your reconnaissance outings.

The following disciplines are also covered: hiking, trekking, cycling and mountain biking, crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing. You are also covered if you are a professional. This insurance is mandatory on the HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc and the UTMB® World Series and is valid for 1 year. The general conditionscan be found HERE.

NB: you pay for your own helicopter evacuation. The choice of evacuation method depends on the organization, who will put the runner's security first.

The choice of the method of evacuation and the choice of hospital depends on the search and rescue and medical officials.

Expenses arising from the use of exceptional methods of rescue or evacuation must be paid by the person rescued who will also have to pay their return from the place to where they were evacuated. It falls to the runner to create their file and present it to their insurance company within the stated deadline.

RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT

When registering for one of the UTMB® events, participants agree to respect the environment and the natural areas they pass through. In particular:

  • Littering is strictly forbidden (gel tubes, paper, organic detritus, plastic wrappers...). Trash/rubbish bins are available at each aid station and they must be used. The race stewards will be checking all along the race route.

  • All participants must keep their rubbish and wrappers with them until they can throw them in the bins at an aid station. Runners should carry a bag or pouch to carry their waste until the next bin. Plastic bags for soiled paper are handed out with the race-bibs. They must be used for collecting any paper used during any urgent need along the route.

  • You must follow the paths as they are way-marked, without short-cutting them. In fact, short-cutting a path causes erosion thus damaging the site.

  • ANo disposable dishes (cutlery, cups, bowls) will be distributed at any check point or aid station. This is to reduce the plastic waste by runners, as well as by the volunteers of the UTMB. . We invite you to bring your own utensils if you wish to eat hot meals at the aid stations.

ELITE RUNNERS

Being an international elite runner gives rights and duties. They are as below:

RIGHTS:

The slots allocated to elite runners on the UTMB World Series Finals are strictly reserved for those who qualify by participating in a UTMB® World Series Event or UTMB World Series Major in the 15 months preceding the UTMB World Series Finals.

UTMB WORLD SERIES EVENT:

Each UTMB World Series Event includes at least one qualifying race in the 50K, 100K and/or 100M category. For each race of 50K, 100K and/or 100M, the top 3 male and top 3 female runners win a slot for the next edition of the UTMB World Series Finals race of the same category. Athletes will have to pay for that bib.

UTMB WORLD SERIES MAJOR:

Each UTMB World Series Major includes one qualifying race in each category 50K, 100K and 100M. For each race of 50K, 100K and 100M, the top 10 male and top 10 female runners win a slot for the next edition of the UTMB World Series Finals race of the same category. Athletes will have to pay for that bib.

If a UTMB World Series event offers multiple races in the same category, only one of these races will be considered a qualifying race for the elite runners to enter the corresponding Final and the elites must choose their race accordingly.

CHANGE OF RACE CATEGORY:

The top 10 men and women (UTMB World Series Majors) and top 3 men and women (UTMB World Series Events) win direct entry into the corresponding Final. Runners may request to change category, this will be assessed based on the runner’s performance and availability in the other race, changes are not guaranteed. Requests must be received before June 15th to the Race Direction(info@utmb.world).

LUCKY LOSER:

If, among the top 10 male and female (UTMB World Series Majors) and top 3 male and female (UTMB World Series Events) some runners do not want (or do not need – because they already got one) to use their slot to enter UTMB World Series Finals, the slots will be kept for a special one go allocation in the first half of June. These slots, as well as any other slots available for any other reason, will be offered to the finishers of a minimum one UTMB World Series Event or UTMB World Series Major qualifying race of 50K, 100K or 100M in the past year, ordered on the base of the best UTMB Index. If a runner doesn’t take the slot, this slot will be offered to the next runner; and so on until all the slots will be allocated.

RACES TAKING PLACE LESS THAN 3 MONTHS BEFORE THE UTMB MONT-BLANC:

The qualification period is open over 15 months to allow elite runners to better manage their calendar and their recovery periods. Therefore, for races taking place 3 months before the UTMB World Series Finals, any qualified elite runner can choose whether to participate in the UTMB World Series Finals the same year or only the following year. We could consider giving a wild card for a shorter race for the same year for those runners who decide to use their entry slot for the Final in which they have a slot in the following year.

PERFORMANCE SLOTS AVAILABLE FOR AGE GROUP ATHLETES

Qualification for the finals is also possible thanks to the classification in the age category for finishers of the UTMB World Series Majors. The rule is as follows:

  • Overall allocation of approximately 55 bibs for age category per race
  • At least one bib is assigned for each age category represented
  • Other bibs are awarded in proportion to the number of runners present in each age category

ELITE RUNNERS AND TDS, MCC, ETC :

Special rules apply for these 3 races. Elite runners have to pay full price to register for the TDS, MCC and ETC. If the race is sold out, elite runners - UTMB index>800 (men) and >675 (women) - may email the organization at info@utmb.world to apply for entry.

DUTIES: All elite runners agree to:

  • Attend to any press conference and official ceremony they are invited to;
  • Attend to any prize-giving ceremony that may concern them;
  • Attend to any prize-giving ceremony that may concern them;

PRIZE MONEY:

This is to highlight the virtuous circle bonding the athletes and the event, an exchange of visibility in which the two parts participate in the success of the event. In 2023, awards will be given for the UTMB World Series Finals : UTMB, CCC, OCC. There is no prize money for the TDS winners.

DROP BAGS / SPARE BAGS

UTMB : at the bib distribution and race pack check, each participant receives a 30 liter bag. After filling it with the items of their choice and closing it, they can drop it off at the welcome center in Chamonix, inside the sport center. The bag is taken to Courmayeur by the organization. Upon arriving in Courmayeur runners must withdraw their bag. When they leave the aid station they must leave - in person - their bag in the allotted area. The bags are then returned to Chamonix. NB: No drop bags in Champex.

CCC : at the bib distribution and race pack check, each participant receives a 30 liter bag which they can fill with their belongings, leaving it in the allotted area near the start. The bag is then returned to Chamonix. NB: No drop bags in Champex.

TDS : at the race pack check, each participant receives 1 x 30 liter bags. 1 bag is to be left just before the start and it must contain the belongings required at the Beaufort aid station which will therefore be returned to the finishing line. During the race, each runner must get their bag when arriving in Beaufort and deposit it again, in the allotted area, before leaving so that it can be returned to Chamonix. The bag is to be left in the allotted area near the starting line.

OCC : at the bib distribution and race pack check, each participant receives a 30 liter bag which they can fill with their belongings, leaving it in the allotted area near the starting line. The bag is then returned to Chamonix.

MCC : at the bib distribution and race pack check, each participant receives a 30 liter bag which they can fill with their belongingsleaving it in the allotted area near the starting line. The bag is then returned to Chamonix.

ETC : each competitor has the possibility to deposit his own bag near the start in Courmayeur.

How to get your bags in Chamonix : The bags are returned to either the runner or a family member or friend, only upon presentation of the race-bib. The bags must be retrieved no later than 2 hours after the end of the race. After that time, the runner must come, in person, to retrieve their bag, at their own cost, at the organization headquarters in Chamonix.

The organization will take to Chamonix the bags of runners who drop out, on condition that their withdrawal is registered. Because of logistical factors, the organization cannot guarantee that all bags are brought to Chamonix before the end of the race.

Only bags supplied by the organization will be transported. Poles are not allowed in these bags. As the items in the bags are neither checked nor controlled, we will accept no claims on that matter. We recommend not to put any valuable items in the bags. We advise you to keep toiletries and spare clothes in Chamonix.

AID STATIONS

Along the race route, there are some points where runners can get food and fluids. Aid stations supply fluids and food for consuming in situ. The organization supplies still water and energizing drinks for filling water bottles/hydration packs and a personal beaker is mandatory. The runner must make sure, when leaving the aid station, that they have the necessary quantity of food and fluids to keep them going until the next aid station. For further information concerning aid stations, visit the page “aid stations”

To enter the aid stations, runners must wear their race bib. The race guide and the relevant pages on our web-site provide an exhaustive list of aid stations pand what kind of food/fluids runners may find there.

CHECK POINTS

Runners are checked upon arrival at an aid station and at some security points. **Unexpected check points are set up along the route. **Their location is not communicated to runners

WAY-MARKING

Way markers are made of a yellow reflective material that catches the light from your headlamp, so that you can easily spot them even at night. WARNING: if you can't see any way marker, you are probably on the wrong path, so turn back! Because we respect the environment, we do not use any paint on the trails.

TIME LIMIT AND CUT-OFF TIMES

The cut-off time for finishing each race is:

  • UTMB : 46 hrs 30 mins
  • CCC : 26 hrs 30 mins
  • TDS : 44 hrs
  • OCC : 14hrs 30 mins
  • MCC : 10hrs
  • ETC : 4hrs

The cut-off times are calculated according to the start of the last “wave” of runners.

You may find the time limit (cut-off times) for leaving the main aid stations on our web site and in the Runner's Guide. In case of any changes (see Exceptional Conditions), the new cut-off times will be announced via SMS/text message.

Cut-off times are calculated to allow participants to reach the finish within the time limit.. In order to be authorized to continue a race, all participants must leave the check point/aid station before the cut-off time. (whatever their time of arrival at the check point).

All participants excluded from the race who wish to continue the route can only do so after having returned their race bib and under their own responsibility and in complete autonomy.

SECURITY AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

There are several medical stations along the route. These stations are directly linked to the race security HQ (+33 9 72 16 67 25). There is medical staff at the race security HQ in Chamonix during the events. Medical stations are intended to assist any person in danger with the organization's own or public means.

It is up to a runner in trouble or seriously hurt to call for the help:

  • By going to a medical aid station
  • By calling the race HQ
  • By asking another runner to alert the security service
  • By using the SOS app LiveRun

Every runner must give assistance to any person in danger and alert the security services. If you are unable to call the race HQ, and only if it is an absolute emergency, you may call directly one of the national security services (especially if you are crossing an area where only emergency calls are possible).

  • 112 (France and Italy)
  • 144 (Switzerland)

Do not forget that any kind of unexpected events - linked to the environment and the race - could make you wait for help longer than expected. Your safety therefore depends upon the quality of the items that you have put in your pack.

All medical, paramedical, first aid and guide staff, as well as any person appointed by the race direction are able to :

  • exclude from the race any participant who is deemed to be unable to continue the event
  • demand to any competitor to use any item of the mandatory equipment
  • evacuate by any means the runners they deem to be in danger
  • refer patients to the most appropriate care structure

If a runner's state of health justifies treatment via intravenous drip, the runner shall compulsorily withdraw from the race.

There is an infirmary in Chamonix available for runners with severe medical problems. Comfort care is based on decision of the medical staff within the limits of the availability. Runners must stay on the marked path, even when they sleep. If you need to sleep along the way, you are highly recommended to use the "sleep bib" supplied by the organization. This bib clarifies that you need to take a little nap without being disturbed. Runners who voluntarily venture from the way-marked course are no longer under the responsibility of the organization.

FINISH

When you finish your race, you will receive the finisher's gift. A post-race meal is served at the UCPA in Chamonix.

SHOWERS

Runners may take a shower only at the end of the race. Runners need to show their race bib in order to enter the shower. During the race, showers - when available - are only accessible on medical advice. Access to the rest room and showers at the finish is strictly limited to barefoot runners.

REST

Runners of the UTMB, CCC and TDS may use the rest area in Chamonix. This room is strictly reserved for runners who have just finished their race. In no way does this constitute a solution for accommodation for the entire night. Runners having finished their race and wishing to prolong their stay must have their own accommodation. UTMB (only): At les Chapieux, Courmayeur and Champex, each competitor can benefit from a rest area (with camp beds and blankets).

RANKING AND AWARDS

For each race, there is a general ranking - men and women - and a category ranking - men and women - (see below further details for each category). UTMB: the first 10 men and the first 10 women in the general ranking, as well as the first 3 runners of each category receive a trophy and a prize. CCC, TDS, OCC : the first 5 men and the first 5 women in the general ranking, as well as the first 3 runners in each category receive a trophy and a prize. MCC, ETC : the first 3 men and the first 3 women in the general ranking, as well as the first runners in each category receive a trophy and a prize.

DROP OUT AND EVACUATION

Except in case of injury, a runner wishig to abandon the race must do so only at a check point. They must inform the check point team leader or report their drop out via the LiveRun app and inform the race HQ. If a runner wishes to abandon while on the route between 2 checkpoints, they must reach the nearest checkpoint where they must report their drop out.Runners who drop out must keep their race bib because it is the pass to access shuttles, buses, meals, treatment rooms... Evacuation works as follows: -Buses are available at some aid stations - marked by a pictogram «bus» on time charts - to take runners who drop out back to Chamonix.

  • Runners who abandon at any other aid station or check point but whose state of health does not require them to be evacuated must return as quickly as possible and by their own means to the nearest point of evacuation.
  • As for aid stations or security points accessible by car or 4x4:
  • After the closing of the aid station/security points, the organization might repatriate any runners who have abandoned and haven't left the aid station yet.
  • In the event of bad weather conditions justifying the partial or total stop of the race, the organization will make sure that all runners are repatriated as soon as possible
