-20% CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2030
Here, we outline our latest actions and ambitions
To reach a new milestone we are setting an ambitious collective goal: to REDUCE OUR CARBON EMISSIONS BY 20% BY 2030, compared to 2024 levels, with a primary focus on one of the most significant areas of impact – mobility.
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY AT THE HEART OF OUR STRATEGY
Mobility has been central to our environmental approach since 2004, when our dedicated transport plan – now known as UTMB Mobility – was introduced to reduce private car use across the Mont-Blanc valleys.
While the results have been encouraging, the reality is stark: travel to the Mont-Blanc region accounts for nearly 86% of our total carbon footprint each year, whereas local transport during the event makes up just 2%*.
To accelerate progress towards our 2030 goal, in 2026 we will introduce a major new measure:
LOTTERY BONUS: Runners who follow the organisation’s recommended low-carbon travel route will benefit from a 30% higher chance of selection in the lottery.
Alongside our emissions reduction efforts, we are launching a collective carbon contribution programme. While every journey leaves a trace we believe contribution plays an essential role in driving the transition – by funding sustainable development and protecting carbon sinks through emissions reduction or sequestration projects.
*Carbon footprint for the 2024 event was calculated by sustainability consultancy firm Utopies.
2026 LOTTERY BONUS: ENCOURAGING RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL
From 2026 we will implement a pioneering initiative:
+30% chance of selection in the lottery for participants who choose a low-carbon travel route recommended by the organisation. This bonus will apply to races that are part of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc lottery – these include the three UTMB World Series Finals (UTMB, CCC, OCC) and also the ETC, which has now adopted the lottery system.
How does it work?
At registration our dedicated tool will help you identify the most efficient low-carbon route from your location. Train, bus, shared transport – every option will be considered to guide you toward the most sustainable journey.
If you commit to the suggested route, you will automatically receive the 30% lottery bonus. To ensure the system remains fair and transparent, you’ll simply be asked to provide proof of travel after registering (e.g. a train ticket, bus ticket, etc.).
The initiative has been designed to reflect the unique realities of each country, and to ensure fair access to responsible travel. Our aim is to encourage everyone to adopt the most climate-conscious travel option, so that – collectively – we can reduce the long-term environmental impact of our sport.
Full details will be made available ahead of registration for the 2026 edition.
COLLECTIVE CARBON CONTRIBUTION: FUNDING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
Reducing our carbon footprint remains the top priority. But even with the most ambitious measures some residual impact will remain. That’s why, from the 2025 edition onwards, we have introduced a CARBON CONTRIBUTION SCHEME.
In 2025 nearly €25,000 was raised through voluntary contributions from runners and the organisation. These funds supported two high-impact, independently audited projects (verified by EcoAct):
- Two agricultural transition projects in Haute-Savoie, France (GAEC Les Chardonnerets farm in Chênex);
- A reforestation initiative in Brazil (Serragem project).
From 2026 the scheme will expand:
- UTMB Group will cover all emissions generated by event operations, including those from volunteers and service providers.
- Partners will contribute according to the emissions generated by their travel to and from the event.
- Carbon contribution will become mandatory for all runners at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc 2026, based on the emissions from their journey between home and the event.
These funds will be 100% transferred to an independent body responsible for selecting and monitoring the supported environmental projects.
OUR LONGSTANDING COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Reducing car use, limiting pollution in the valleys and making the event more accessible via alternative transport have been core aims of our dedicated UTMB Mobility system since its launch in 2004 – this programme continues to grow stronger each year.
Travelling to the event
In 2024 and 2025 several new initiatives were introduced to support low-carbon travel:
Partnerships with TGV Lyria and Alpy Transfers: exclusive discounts on Paris–Geneva journeys and onward transfers to the Mont-Blanc region.
Launch of the UTMB GO platform: a simple planning tool to compare travel options based on time, carbon footprint and logistics. UTMB GO is available to runners, supporters and volunteers.
Getting around locally
Limiting traffic during the event is essential to reduce congestion, preserve the natural environment, and encourage travel without cars.
- Each year investment in UTMB Mobility increases, with more than €500,000 committed since 2023.
→ 15 routes, 28 bus stops and 120 buses are deployed during the event, with 110 on the busiest day.
→ Impact: over 6,000 individual car journeys eliminated.
- Shuttle services to race starts and the UTMB Bus system for following runners during the races (in place since 2004).
Q&A
LOTTERY
From the 2026 edition, a dedicated tool, UTMB GO, will suggest a low-carbon itinerary adapted to each participant's geographical location. Those who follow the recommended route will benefit from a 30% extra chance of being drawn to take part in the final events of the UTMB World Series circuit.
The implementation of this bonus will take into account the realities of each country, in order to guarantee fair chances to all participants regardless of their place of residence.
Details will be provided before pre-registration opens.
Sanctions are under discussion and will be announced before pre-registration.
Verification and consequences will be detailed before pre-registration.
The draw bonus on commitment to follow the recommended round-trip route concerns races subject to the draw, i.e. the UTMB, CCC, OCC and ETC (which will integrate the draw system from 2026).
No. The implementation of this bonus will take into account the realities of each country, in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all participants regardless of where they live.
Chamonix is accessible by train and bus. As organizers of a major international event, it's our duty to limit our environmental footprint and to encourage participants to do the same. 86% of the event's emissions come from transport to and from the event. Reducing the impact of the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc must be done collectively, involving all parties concerned.
CARBON CONTRIBUTION
The carbon contribution funds projects that increase carbon sinks or avoid carbon emissions, thereby contributing to the global effort to combat global warming. We work with an intermediary organization (EcoAct en 2025) to which we pay 100% of the contribution amounts, to select projects with the utmost care. Some of the projects will have a local impact in the departments hosting the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc, and all will be certified to the highest standards.
In concrete terms: if your trip emits 2 tonnes of CO2, your contribution will finance projects that will absorb or avoid 2 tonnes of CO2 (for example, financing agricultural practices that sequester more CO2).
Despite all our efforts to reduce the impact of the event, some emissions remain unavoidable. That's why we're setting up this carbon contribution program to support sustainable development by financing concrete carbon sequestration or emission avoidance projects.
Each participant will have to contribute up to the amount of emissions linked to his or her journeys. Since 2024, the organization has been contributing up to the amount of emissions linked to the travel of staff, volunteers and guests, on-site transport and emissions linked to the event, such as refreshments, energy, digital, etc.
The amounts collected are 100% channeled through an organization that audits the projects and guarantees their quality. For this, an organization such as Eco Act charges an average commission of 20%. This means that 80% of the funds collected go directly to the projects supported. The remaining 20%, however, contributes to the carbon contribution dynamic.
In 2025, €8000 was raised from volunteer runners. UTMB Group contributed a total of around €25000. This sum was used to support projects in Haute-Savoie and Brazil.
The cost varies according to the mode of transport used and the distance covered between the rider's address and Chamonix. The price per tonne is €25/tonne of CO2eq.
Here are a few concrete examples of the most represented populations (round-trip):
- France: between <1€ et & max 10€ (depending on your departure city and mode of transport)
- Italy, Spain, United Kingdom: max 20€
- USA: between 45 € and 70 €
- Asia: between 65€ and 75€
- South America: about 85€
- Australia: between 100 and 130€
